When elderly pet owners have to go into care or sadly pass away, their animals need to find another home. Often however, the pets themselves are elderly and have difficulty competing against their much younger counterparts. So what happens? Who looks after them?

This is where Trindledown Farm in Great Shefford comes in. Run by the National Animal Welfare Trust, it is a West Berkshire retirement home for elderly animals. A team of dedicated workers and volunteers ensure that the pets have a happy life for the rest of their twilight years.

Compatible dogs are paired up and given their own room, which is made to look as homely as possible with sofas, carpets and a TV set. All the furniture has been donated and makes all the difference to pets who are used to snuggling up in a living room.

Each room backs up to a large outdoor space where the animals can enjoy the outside. The lucky canines also enjoy daily walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside.

The room of cats also looks homely with snug cat baskets and sofas lining the room, outside there are scratching posts and comfy cushions for them to laze on.

As well as cats and dogs the farm looks after goats, cows, birds and horses. In fact, they will take in most animals as long as they are ten years or older.

Take a look at our photo gallery to see a selection of the pets staying at the centre – many of them would love a home. Click on the links on the right-hand side to see the photos.

If you are unable to home a pet, why not sponsor one? You can sponsor one of the many old or unwanted animals from £12 a year. You will get a photograph of your chosen pet and you can visit them at the farm.

They are also keen for more volunteers with a spare few hours a week to clean the units, walk the dogs, groom the pets, help out at the monthly barn sales as well as other tasks.

Contact the farm for more information on how you can help, details are in the left- hand box on this page.
