First published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has consistently been Jane Austen's most popular novel. It portrays life in the genteel rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between the haughty Fitzwilliam Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) and the lively and quick-witted Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley).

Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity in this novel. Misconceptions and hasty judgements lead to heartache and scandal, but eventually to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. Basildon Park will be closed between Monday 23rd August and Saturday 16th October 2004, though it will be open during the August bank holiday.
