Getting the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers

Nations/regions

Attitudes towards the BBC's public purposes

In order for the BBC to fulfil its mission to inform, educate and entertain, the Royal Charter and Agreement sets out six public purposes.

The Trust has set remits for these public purposes, and in order to monitor the performance of the BBC in delivering the purposes, the Trust carries out an annual quantitative Purpose Remit Survey. This research asks respondents to express their views on both the importance they attach to the purpose priorities and on the BBC's current effectiveness in delivering them.

There were boost interviews within the UK nations and among respondents within black and minority ethnic groups to allow detailed analysis within these audience groups.

Accessibility and distribution

Strategy review stage two research - accessibility and distribution

The purpose of this research was to explore licence fee payers' attitudes towards the strategy review proposals which impacted specifically on the accessibility and distribution of BBC services.

Public value tests

Local video

The BBC Trust commissioned this piece of research to assess the appeal, likelihood of use and perceived value of the BBC's Local Video proposition across the regions in the UK. The research aimed to explore the relevance of 'local' in people's lives, how engaged they were with local news, and whether the proposed BBC Local Video service could engage a significant number of people across the segments.

Gaelic Digital Service

In January 2008, the Trust approved the launch of the Gaelic Digital Service on cable, satellite and broadband. Before this happened, the Trust commissioned a piece of quantitative research which contributed to the Public Value Test carried out on the proposed new service. The research consisted of a representative sample in each of the 4 nations of the UK. It assessed the level of support there was in principle among UK licence fee payers for the existence of a dedicated Gaelic Digital Service and looked at whether the service was something that the UK licence fee payers felt the BBC should be doing. It also explored whether UK licence fee payers felt the amount of provision outlined in the proposal represents was an appropriate level provision for an indigenous minority language.
