On Wednesday 19 December the Trust published a finding by its Editorial Standards Committee (ESC) on the edition of Newsnight broadcast on 2 November 2012.

A combination of the programme, which included a report on child sexual abuse in North Wales care homes in the 1970s and 1980s, and online speculation, led to Lord McAlpine being wrongly identified online in relation to child sexual abuse allegations.

The finding includes:

  • The finding from the Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee.
  • A report from the BBC Executive for the Trust in response to a number of questions from the Trust about the circumstances surrounding the 2 November Newsnight
  • The MacQuarrie report commissioned by the then Director-General, George Entwistle, in the aftermath of the programme’s broadcast. A summary of actions and findings from this report was published by the BBC Executive on 12 November.
