The Old Guitarist (1903-1904)
Picasso frequently changed his artistic style and his career is often broken down into different periods. One of the first was the Blue Period, an emotional, introspective style of painting that he pioneered in the wake of the suicide of his close friend Carlos Casagemas in Paris in 1901.
Casagemas's death had a major impact on Picasso. He began to paint more sombre and melancholic subjects using a palette predominantly of blues that reflected his emotional state.
