Step 5 - Civil Engineering Building
Leave the Hunterian Museum and go back down University Avenue, turn left onto Oakfield Avenue where, up on the wall of the University's Civil Engineering Building, is a sculpture that openly wears its debt to Cubism, with its split planes and abstracted representation. Local sculptor Lucy Baird combined Cubism and civil engineering on an impressive scale for this work, called 1840-1990. Although Cubism originally emphasised new ways of seeing natural forms, this piece shows how much it has been adopted and has evolved into a scientific, almost futuristic style - some 80 years after Cubism was first introduced.
