Flowers in a Stoneware Vase
Undated
58.3 x 41.9 cm
oil on panel

When Jan Breughel completed this painting, tulips were a fairly new phenomenon in Europe. They were brought in from Turkey and only began to be cultivated in Europe in the late 16th Century. They went on to become so highly prized that at the height of 'tulipmania' a single bulb would have cost far more than one of these flower paintings.

I think this is a beautiful website. I frequently send pictures to my friends to cheer them up,encourage and just say 'Hya/Goodmorning'. They love it!

i really think that it is about time to take up art! i admire people who are deeply inspired by nature which gives them the incentive to paint.

Personaly i think that this painting is amazing. And that it has inspired me to take up art when i reach university. Unfortunately i have a long wait as i am only in Secondary.

Look at the sumptous jewellery at the bottom right with the picture detail button. Maybe Breughel is suggesting that tulipmania has made the flowers as precious as gems?
