I am using this picture for an art lesson for children with special needs. I am sectioning the painting and each child will have to attempt to draw a square each...it might be a mess of yellow, then again they might surprise me! A beautiful painting so bright and cheery in these dull winter months and a good way to show a parable about life.
Amanpreet Lally from Birmingham

I thought this website was good, I did it for my art homework! I'm only 13 but I thought that this website was good for research and stuff since I had to collect visual and written information on Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Personally, I think the painting is a bit dull though. Livened up it would look cool though!! :)
Ian Lyall from Barnsley
The first proper art gallery I went to was the Van Gogh in Amsterdam and I almost got lost in his paintings. The ferociousness of the pallette knife strokes coupled with sweeping contrast of the colours he used. I could almost feel how he must have been thinking as I looked at the cornfield painting, with the wind making the corn bend and the crow been blown about in the sky. Fantastic and vibrant, if somewhat deranged, mentality which you can see creeping thru in the Sunflowers picture.
June West Sussex
These flowers describe the man himself, bright,"in your face", almost aggresive and wonderful beyond descrption.
S. Garrett Schafer from ill.
its one of the most skiiled paintings i'v ever seen!
Alice ,Doha
It is as though those flowers need all that splendour of vibrant yellow light behind them, to live through the diffrent shades of yellow before dying out.
jessica from perth australia
i am of the controversial opinion that gaugain and van gogh were lovers so to me it is a trajic story....of van goghs expectancy for gaugain to turn up in france but he never did so gradually van gogh lost hope and his sunflowers once whole and bright with passion wilted....
his unflowers series are simple yet so expresive

Dave Gancode
Sunflowers are the symbol of veganism, and an example of the Golden ratio of Phi 1.618 and the Fibonacci sequence in action. Like Da Vinci before him it could be that Da Vincent followed Da Vegan Code. A lack of Vitamin B12 and sufficient essential fats and DHA and EPA may account for his later mental illness and the ear episode.
Angel from Sudbury
All of the comments really helpful and made me realise different things about the painting. Pat Walk is wrong (although it is his\her opinion) they are beautiful and happy!!
sam london (8yrs)

D Boirum from Peoria
read about his life as a young child, did his difficult life create his art or did his art make his life difficult? Either way, we all benefit from his perspective...
Hannah Sullivan, Australia
I really like this pic, its very warm and enviting.
Kitty from London
i cant believe that some people here are criticising the work of one of the most amazing painters in history!!!!!!! what is wrong with you? i dont think you can say Van Gogh should have changed anything in his art. may be come people would have taken on the subject matter in a different way but that is not to say the way van gogh painted isnt right!!! his work is absolutely beautiful and full of soul
Msawenkosi from Durban
I think he was on holidays and when visited his friend his he looked out side a window and saw these flowers and he liked the colour and he thought that if he cut the flowers they will die and he desided to draw the flowers as they were
chesly Soth Africa, Graphic designer 2 b
He used happy colours yellow, blue, red etc and it is a warm art work, warm colours brings it to the front and it is a good art work with a intresting composition. That makes it good for decoration but he outlined too much and out lining makes look like a real 2d painting, whilst it had to look 3d in our eyes.
reena from london (14 yrs)
like all pieces of work, they can be improved, and all deserve a bit of criticism. I think his 12 sunflowers are more interesting, especially because of the complimentary colours he used - he painted all the flowers yellow/orange and painted the background blue. It brings out the complexion of the flowers. Yeh, so I don't think this particular painting was his best...
Diane from Georgia
i really like how this painting is so uplifting and so vibrant. I am currently writing a report on this exact paing and i chose it because yellow is such a happy color and it makes you feel happy inside. this might be one of his best works! :)
emily Morgan (7 yrs) from WORKSOP
He used a lot of lines in his painting.
I have been drawing some of his flowers on the date of 3.2.06 . I like his irises pictures the best.I have been painting the sunflowers at school.
lexy from larky
im usein van gogh's paintings of sunflowers for my critical analisis for my art and design standard grade. art is a huge part of my life and my future carrer choises in art and design rely on this exam peice. this is why i chose these paintings, as not only will i learn from them, i also have the chance to be uplifted rom these paintings and accualy enjoy doing a critical annalisis for once. =P i hope no one i know reads this coz th has made my reputation drop rapidly!! lol.

i love the way he signed the vase, as if he had hand crafted it himself then put some flowers in it to show off the vase, and of course his painting skills. i would enjoy this being in my kitchen it would liven up winter mornings.
Sarah Dadd from Cambridge
I love the deep colours. I think the way a would-be boring painting is made more intereasting by lovely brush strokes and blending that really catches the light is fantastic
fish from the sea
I love you vincent van gogh

Vincent van gogh inspires me
jess bendigo
this painting is dull yet still seems to catch the motion of the light that hits the composition. van gogh is quite the genius
Hannah Roberts From Sale, Manchester
I thought it was very helpful but Thought it needed a bit more about the Sunflower Series of Van Gogh
Graham form Guernsey
You have to see it in the gallery to beleive it. The colours work fantastically. It is almost luminescent, and draws the eye towards the flowers immediately. The texture detail is also very surprising.
megan from glasgow

To know him is to understand him, admire him and love him.
natalie
the image painted by vicent van gogh is ok but not the best drawing some of the flowers are nice and detailed and others dull also im not that drawn to the coulor either.
DANNY FROM PENDLETON COLLEGE
i think the sunflowers reflect on van gogh himself as this made him happy inside as to which he decided to paint them. the yellow background i think is too much for the flowers but it also helps them stand out from the 2d background instincts from the vase and tables and makes the flowers themselves look more realistic
laura, salford
the picture of the sunflowers are not very detailed, the different shades of yellow are not very nice. I think that the painting would look better if the use of the colour was brighter. In the painting there is part of life and dead in it.
i have to zoom in twice...
to really get much out of em.
a.birgul.baris

The BBC website is excellent for my childrens homework activities and this site on Van Gogh has really helped my son to understand Van Gogh and his passion for painting. Brilliant.
Joy Roy Choudhury, Calcutta
This soothing Helios sparkle by the master painter Van Gogh underlines his "lust for life". Sunflowers (nature/sun) are the very source of life on earth. This vibrant mood of life bursting out is beautifully undercut by the poignant drooping and wilting sunflowers in the vase along side the radiant ones. Life is transient but this painting remains immortal. "So long as men can breathe or eyes can see/so long lives this and this gives life to thee". Sonnet 18, William Shakespeare
Gerry from Kent
Yellow Yellow Yellow
What a site
David Arathoon /Canada
His work was colour studies, using traditional Dutch vanitas symbols...Yellow, (the brightest colour on the wheel), representing GOD and the SUN, this painting is a Symphony in GOLD, with great depth, zooming allows one to closely inspects the complimentary mauves etc., subtly infused. This painting is full of colour . Very excellent site!!!
Vincent Plummer from Edinburgh (age 7)
On every sunflower, the petals look golden.
Jeraldene Lovell in Dorset
This is a valuable website for anyone who wants to understand the mysteries of how these amazing artists painted and lived. It is an 'easy to navigate' site and I really like the ability to zoom in on detail, most impressive.
Thank you so much.

Michela Morley from Hastings
I like the fact that he painted some in their full glory and some others past their best, with floppy heads, just as they would really look like in my living room after I'd forgotten to change the water for a day or two!
PAT WALK, MILWAUKEE WI
These flowers look as evil as if they belong in the little shop of horrors...why do people love them??
Christine from Harvard
How lovely to have the opportunity to view this painting in detail. Thanks BBC!

"Yellow flowers in a yellow bowl - what colour should I paint the background? I know - yellow!", thought Vincent. Inspired!
