Sunflower
2003
198 x 152.4 cm
oil on canvas

"This is a peculiar painting of sunflowers. I planted some seeds in a big, circular, concrete pot in my garden and by the end of the summer they had grown into what looked like a group of figures.

"One autumn day, when the sky was all white from fog, they looked kind of sad with their heads hanging down, and all of the petals had fallen off."

Sadness and Loneliness. Negative feelings are shown in these flowers(painting).

Mini Agarwal Dang from India
The picture is intriguing, as if it conveys the flow of life. It depicts sadness on one end but strikes a chord somewhere deep within....It's probably the colours or the majesty of sunflowers even past prime.

elmahdi, morocco
frightening! they look like witches, with black pointed hats and yellow bleached hair.

dalia
Fragile, delicate, beautiful and lifeless..very depressing

Cherilyn of Newmarket
I really enjoyed this picture. A lovely feeling of peace.

Sara from Belfast
I love Self's style. There's something eerie about this picture. It is very strange but in a beautiful way. We normally think of sunflowers as quite vibrant and strong plants. Always with the flower heads on view almost showing of their beauty. But this picture shows them wilting away as nature and the changing seasons takes it effect. We only really see their beauty for a short time before they fade and are taken from us. It is sad but lovely at the same time.

mike from pendleton
i think that the artist has created a masterpeice the sunflowers are magnificently presented with long beautiful long stems but then the flowers are finished and the light in the background makes it abit spiritual

danny brack from pendleton college
i think this is too dismal and could signal the life and death of the flowers

Michael Huby, Manchester
I like this as it reminds me of the immagry from the book 'nightmare before christmas' by Tim Burton. the flat colout on the page give a shiluette illusion untill you see the yellow of the pettals. LOVE IT ;) X

joe from pendelton
These sunflowers are magnificently grown to my liking. Everytime, i notice new colours in the sunflowers.

J. from Pendleton
I think the diversity in the textures are very well executed and I feel this particular piece is exceptionally different and original to his other pictures.

gb from london
it is hauntingly tender... the way all the flowers are facing away from the viewer is very curious... allowing us a new perspective and perhaps suggesting to us that we should too alter our perspective and judgement on what is beautiful etc

Jana from Bulgaria
I find the flower has very tiny stims and the petals are somehow longer and unnaturally hanging and this way the flower looks romantic and unreal.

Jade Connor From Hampshire
Ilove the way the paint flows over the canvas as if the flower is alive and preserved forever!

Irene from Costa Rica
I think the virtue of this painting is its ablility of conveying sadness and decadence... I find it extremely nostalgic...

christine savage from kent
There's something about this picture that makes you feel its energy, the movement in the petals reminds me of the flares thrown off by the sun itself

saira aitzaz/pakistan
God's nature painted beautifully. It seems to b as if the flowers r looking at themselves, just knowing that someone has made them so beautiful n perfect.
