Roses and Larkspur
1885
59.5 x 50.5 cm
oil on canvas

Henri Fantin-Latour was one the best flower painters of the 19th Century. He brought a new style to flower painting, loading his brush with paint and applying it thickly to the canvas. The short brushstrokes and soft light that Fantin-Latour favoured give a delicious sensuousness to his work.

This painting was at one point in its history sliced into two so it could be sold as separate pieces. A Glasgow art dealer finally managed to acquire both halves, and reunited them back into a complete painting.

However carefully I looked, using the zoom feature, I couldn't see the join where the 2 halves of the pictures have been put back together!
