Roses
Undated
33 x 42.2 cm
oil on canvas

Victoria Dubourg and her husband Henri Fantin-Latour were two of the most prolific flower painters of the 19th Century. As with many female artists however, her more famous husband overshadows her work.

Contemporary impressionist artists such as Manet and Degas, whom the couple knew, influenced Fantin-Latour. Dubourg tended not to follow the lead of these artists, and her work is more like that of traditional 17th Century Dutch flower painting. The dark backgrounds in her work highlight the lovingly painted and highly detailed arrangements of flowers, giving them a jewel-like quality.

kirsi mannonen finland
gorgeous. such fresh, lovely colours.

Jessica Z. from Phila,PA,USA
vibrant yet the black background seems to exert a feeling of lonliness and despair. Still, the artist is not very thorough with detail. Perhaps she is trying to convey to us that though in the midst of despair, there will come a time of hope and beauty.

Alice from Chester
I can smell the roses.

Kathleen Peck, Pasadena, California
Although drooping, the roses still exude their unique lushness. They resemble a nineteenth-century society beauty after a ball.

Arabella from Santa Cruz, CA, USA
Beautiful use of white for highlighting and for the white flowers.
