Love in Idleness
1891
87 x 165.5 cm
oil on canvas

Highly successful in his lifetime, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was perhaps best known for his representations of ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian life. Although he was so enamoured of this period that he redesigned his London house to look like a Pompeiian villa, his paintings usually gave a very Victorian view of the ancient world.

In Love in Idleness (also known as Love Votaries) the models are very obviously pretty Victorian ladies wearing classical dress.

Roses are a common theme in this artist's work and seem to embody the beauty and sensuality of his vision of the classical world.
