Lilium longiflorum 'Ice Queen'
1997
76 x 57 cm
watercolour on paper

"For the flower painter to paint white lilies on a white background, that is a real challenge because in fact there is actually no white paint used.

"What actually happens is that areas that need to be in complete whiteness, complete highlight are actually left unpainted and what is painted are the shadow areas and the darker areas of the petals. What's important is what you leave out as well as what you paint.

"I have the plants set up in the studio against a north light, which is a cool, constant light. You have an arrangement where you can see a lot of shadow on the white flower, and also a lot of highlights, so you need a balance of the two. Through studies you can work out a way to describe the flower so that it can appear on a piece of white paper without using white paint and appear to be completely solid, and completely living on the page."

The beauty of movement depicted through the delicate curls lends character as if the flower dances and beckons the viewer. Exquisite!

I love this picture! It's so peaceful and relaxing just to look at. It's a beautiful representation of such a beautiful flower, Guest has really done it justice. It's a shame for those who cannot fully appreciate it!

It takes real talent and skill to paint white flowers in watercolour, as anyone who has ever tried knows well. Coral Guest is extremely skilled in her art.

Pauline Philbrook from Oxford
Beautiful painting!

I quite like the painting as a botanical representation, but it is rather lifeless. I am currently doing macro images of flowers and partiularly Lillies. I do try to frame them differently and try to present my images from a different perspective than simply reproducing a lifelike image. The program on BBC2 was very interesting and give a great insight into the way Coral manages to capture the lifelike quality to her painting. I think more attention needs to be paid to the stemens though.

Glenda, Scotland
Having only recently dscovered the richness of the lily flower (I'm gradually accruing a collection in my garden, it is the texture of the blooms that most fascinates. I'm intellectually exercised by the idea that Coral Guest has achieved this representation without layering on the paint. I hanker to obtain such vision.

Jane, NY
Although it is correct botanically i fail to see what everyone else does. To me it is a realistic representation which is praiseworthy but i feel it has no depth or passion. It depicts a lily but to me represents and symbolises nothing.

Maria Gilbert,Miami,Florida USA
The dream of my life was to paint just like Coral...what a blessing! I am sure a lot of hard work goes into her work, I consider myself lucky to be able to enjoy her color, form, delicacy of brush..well done Coral! and thank you!

I am a botanical painter and of all the books on this subject which I refer to Coral's is my bible. I think she is the greatest flower painter in this country. Rose

The painting holds a feeling of joy, as well as truth and simplicity. The information Coral gives about painting the white flowers without using actual white paint is amazing! Very inspiring and uplifting. Thank you ...
