Flowers in a Terracotta Vase
1736-7
133.5 x 91.5 cm
oil on canvas
This painting is made up of flowers and fruit from different seasons, including peonies, poppies, blue iris, marigolds, tulips, roses and auriculas. A sprig of apple blossom peeks out on the right, and the base of the urn is laden with grapes, peaches and a chaffinch's nest.
There are two dates inscribed on the pedestal: 1736 and 1737. The length of time taken to complete the painting has been attributed to Van Huysum's waiting until he could obtain certain blooms to complete it. The yellow rose takes pride of place because it was particularly rare at the time; it hangs luxuriously over the urn near the very centre of the composition.
