SUNFLOWER
Long before Van Gogh's Sunflowers began captivating art lovers all over the world, ancient civilisations such as the Incas had made the sunflower the emblem of their sun god.
The sunflower itself symbolises life, strength and sunshine but over the centuries in art it has become the symbol of the ardent lover and the faithful husband, the loyal courtier and the pious soul.
In the second episode of the series, presenter Monty Don explores how this noble flower, with its blazing petals, has always been a potent emblem in painting.
Interviewees: Dr Caroline Campbell (National Gallery), John Leighton (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam), Ann Sumner (National Museum & Galleries of Wales), Janet Cubey (RHS Wisley), Emma Dennis (Watts Gallery), Merlin Holland (Oscar Wilde's grandson), Stephen Calloway (Victoria & Albert Museum).
The series is produced in association with the Royal Horticultural Society, the National Gallery and other UK regional galleries.
