George Frederic Watts
1817-1904
English painter Watts was largely self-taught. In 1843 he was awarded a prize in the competition for the decoration of the Houses of Parliament and used it to travel to Italy to study fresco painting. Watts was hugely ambitious for his art, seeing himself as a grand historical and allegorical painter and sculptor in the mould of Michelangelo. Many of his best works are to be found in the Watts Gallery near Guildford, created by his devoted second wife. |
