Anthony van Dyck
1599-1641
This Flemish painter earned such a good reputation that his services as a portraitist were in international demand from royalty and the aristocracy. In 1620 Van Dyck made his first of many visits to England, where he worked for a short time at the court of King James I. He travelled to Italy where he was overwhelmed with commissions to paint aristocratic families. In 1632 he returned to England where Charles I made him court artist. |
