Jo Self
b. 1956
Jo Self remembers setting flowers afloat on water as a child, though she was not precociously driven to reproduce them on canvas. Her aspirations were more literary: she wrote for newspapers, had a radio play produced, and still writes poetry. After the birth of her first child, she studied at Wimbledon School of Art and at Chelsea College of Art and Design.
She has lectured at Wimbledon and at the Slade School, and has shown her work solo and in group exhibitions. She was Artist-in-Residence at Kew Gardens 2001-2002.
Her canvases are large and direct in their manipulation of texture, light and darkness. By layering pigment heavily upon pigment, she strives to capture the vibrancy and intensity of her plant subjects.
Jo's major project for 2005 is a trip to the Dalai Lama's garden in Dharamsala to paint his flowers. This new body of work will form an exhibition, 'Paintings from the Peace Garden'.
