Paintings By This Artist

Rachel Ruysch
1664-1750

A floral still life specialist, Ruysch is considered to be the most talented female flower painter in history. Raised in Amsterdam, Ruysch was trained by Willem van Aelst, whose influence can be seen in the dark backgrounds she frequently used. To add variety to her classic portfolio of floral bouquets on a ledge, she set some plant and fruit still lifes in woodland, and surrounded them with creatures. Her ability to portray nature with such accuracy may have been inherited from her father, a professor of botany and anatomy. Ruysch moved to The Hague and entered the painters' guild with her portrait painter husband, Juriaen Pool, with whom she had ten children.
