Sir Edward John Poynter
1836-1919
Poynter decided to embark on an artistic career after meeting and being inspired by Victorian artist Lord Frederic Leighton. He studied in Paris under Charles Gleyre before returning to London in 1859. Poynter, a neo-classical painter, produced many society portraits and landscape pictures. In 1896 he was knighted and elected President of the Royal Society, a role he served for 22 years. Although his career in public office was going well, his reputation as an artist, which had never lived up to Leighton's, was in decline by the beginning of the 20th century. |
