Fra Filippo Lippi
1406-1469
Filippo Lippi had a colourful life as a monk, slave, lover, fraudster and distinguished painter. He left the Carmelite Monastery in Florence in 1432 after painting the first of many frescoes in the church. The influential Medici family regularly commissioned him to execute pieces for convents and churches. It was while painting in a convent in Prato that he began a romantic liaison with nun Lucrezia Buti. The Pope later released the lovers from their vows and they were married. Their son, Filippino, became a famous Florentine painter in his own right. |
