Jan Davidsz de Heem
1606-1683/4
De Heem exerted a strong influence on Dutch still life painting, particularly in the three centres in which he lived and worked - Antwerp, Utrecht and Leiden. His work united influences from the contrasting sober Dutch and bold Flemish styles. De Heem painted fruit and flower pieces and was well known for combining these with various 'vanitas' objects such as exotic shells, skulls, hourglasses or gold and silver. |
