Jan Breughel the Elder
1568-1625
He first learned to paint from his grandmother and later travelled to Italy to study. The archdukes of Habsburg, the King of Poland and the Cardinal of Milan were among his clientele. His floral paintings often contained flowers which bloomed at different times of the year, and he once wrote to the Cardinal to explain that he had to travel to Brussels to draw rare flowers which weren't available in Antwerp. Breughel collaborated with many artists, including his friend Rubens, who added the human figures to Breughel's depictions of landscapes and animals. |
