Lawrence Alma-Tadema
1836-1912
Born and educated in the Netherlands, Alma-Tadema found inspiration for his paintings while honeymooning with his first wife in Pompeii. Thereafter much of his work portrayed scenes from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. Art dealer Ernest Gambart commissioned many of his classical paintings which were a hit in England. He subsequently moved there and was naturalised as a British subject in 1873. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1879, and was knighted in 1899. This success, however, began to fade in 1911 and he moved to Germany where he died the following year. |
