Painting Flowers is a virtual art gallery containing many of the paintings featured in the BBC Four television series of the same name.

Four flower species are examined - the sunflower, lily, tulip and rose.

Read about each painting's history and the artist who created it. The picture detail feature beside each painting lets you zoom in to examine the paintings in intricate detail.

You can submit your thoughts on each painting, read about contemporary artists and their work with flowers, and test your knowledge with the quiz.

Painting Flowers on TV
Presented by Monty Don and first shown on BBC Four in May 2004, the four-part series on the flower in art tells the stories of four iconic flowers through paintings housed in galleries across Britain.

From Your Perspective

Take a closer look with the picture detail. The rose petals are fabulous, and the look of enjoyment on Heliogabolus and his guests' faces - SO decadent!
