From Senegal, Youssou N'Dour is much revered by his fellow countrymen: he has been named Senegalese personality of the century by Nouvel Horizon, the African journal. He still plays at his club, Thiossane
His duet with Neneh Cherry, 7 Seconds, was an international hit in 1994
His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but at 16 he joined Star Band, then at the forefront of modern Senegalese music
He is passionate about African identity and apartheid issues and has been a UNICEF Ambassador for the 'Year of the Child'
