The Super Rail Band of Bamako
THE SUPER RAIL BAND OF BAMAKO AT WOMAD 2003
Saturday 31 January 2004 midnight - 1am

A chance to see one of the supergroups of African music playing a collection of energetic grooves.

Formed in 1970 with the backing of the National Railway Company of Mali, few bands can have had as unusual a birth as the Super Rail Band. Over the years the line up has changed, both Salif Keita and Mory Kante have spent time as lead vocalists, and recently the whole brass section was dropped, but the Super Rail flavour of 'Manding swing' has remained constant.

There was notoriously strong competition between the band and Les Ambassadeurs throughout the 1970s when Keita left the former for the latter, but it only served to stimulate the production of ever more exciting dance music in that region of West Africa.
