Mariza
  MARIZA
Wednesday 3 August 2005 2.40am-3.40am (Tues night); Monday 8 August 2.45am-3.45 (Sun night)

Mariza has brought the traditional songs of Portugal known as Fado to an international audience. Due to associations with the dictatorship that only came to an end in the 1970s, these Portuguese blues were seen as reactionary within the country itself. It took Mariza's strong voice and impassioned delivery to make the genre fashionable once more. The singer won the Europe category in the 2003 Radio 3 World Music Awards.

This session was recorded in the Union chapel, London and features classic fados and original compositions from Mariza's album Fado em Mim. A trio of Portugese guitarists joins Mariza onstage.
