JANE BIRKIN: ARABESQUE
Saturday 4 June 2005 12.40am-1.35am (Friday night)
Jane Birkin was one of the iconic figures of the 1960s, known for her gamine looks, sweet voice and appearances in films such as Blow Up. Married to the legendary singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg from 1968-1980, they recorded Je T'Aime … Moi Non Plus, a song seen as so scandalous at the time that it was banned by the Vatican, not to mention the BBC.
The songs in the concert are taken from her album Arabesque, a reworking of classic Gainsbourg songs by Birkin and Algerian violinist Djamel Benyelles, which adds Arab and Oriental sounds to the originals.
