In PicturesComics Britannia: The Trigan Empire, Don Lawrence
The Trigan Empire from Look and Learn, 4 August 1967Don Lawrence (1928-2003)Born in East Sheen, London in 1928, Lawrence's highly detailed, lavishly coloured artwork found success on series like The Trigan Empire and Storm, well before the aid of computers made this look easier to achieve. He started work in comics by drawing for Mick Anglo's studio, illustrating Marvelman in the 1950s, before moving onto Westerns like Davey Crockett, Wyatt Earp and eventually historical epic Karl the Viking for Lion. His big hit, The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire was in Look and Learn between 1965 and 1974. Lawrence began working for Dutch publisher Oberon and had great success with the science fiction/fantasy series Storm. The artist retired in 2002 and was knighted by Queen Beatrix of Holland the following year. See a detail from this page. Featured artwork © IPC+ Syndication Don Lawrence tribute site
