"Before Monterey I didn't know what a concert film was. Nobody did. There hadn't been one." - DA Pennebaker
Two years before Woodstock, more than 200,000 people gathered in and around the Monterey County Fairgrounds for a three day celebration of music, peace and love - the first open-air concert in pop history.
Organisers John Philips and Lou Adler asked DA Pennebaker to film it. He directed a team of cameramen that included other Direct Cinema pioneers Richard Leacock and Albert Maysles.
The film epitomises the Summer of Love - almost every image associated with the 60s can be seen in the film.
Among the artists in the film are Otis Redding, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Ravi Shankar, The Who and Jimi Hendrix, who finishes his set by setting his guitar on fire.
