The British Way of Death: roadside shrine
  DYING TONIGHT
Monday 6 February 2006

In the second series of programmes about the way we live now, BBC Four devotes a night to the contemplation of how the British define themselves through their attitudes to the rituals of death.

A new spirit of informality has begun to transform the way we mourn privately - and publicly. It's a far cry from the elaborate rituals and protocols of mourning in Victorian times. Today's departed are just as likely to be sent on their way to the strains of Robbie Williams as they are to a classic hymn. Together with the phenomenon of the roadside memorial, are we improvising new rituals to fill a more profound vacuum in our secular society?
