I'm sure everyone can remember the fantastic images of the Notting Hill Carnival parading down the Mall to open the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. The royal endorsement was a tribute to the amazing work and passion that goes into Britain's leading black arts event.

About to celebrate its 40th anniversary in August, the carnival has, however, had a turbulent history. This Time Shift programme tells how a small community event gained a position at the very heart of Britain's cultural establishment. Some are now asking if it has grown too big for the streets of Notting Hill.
