Xiao's Long March is by Wu Gong, and is the first in a trilogy of films by young Chinese filmmakers about the New China. It follows Xiao as he decides to leave his parents and their street stall and become one of the 1.5 million volunteers in the People's Liberation Army.

Training takes place in horrifying conditions and the film is a distant cousin of American rookie movies. All I can say is that I hope our army never has to fight the cold-hardened platoon of which Xiao becomes a reluctant part.
