Startup.com is one of those films that makes sense of the romance of American capitalism. It’s set in the strange era, now seemingly long past, of dotcom frenzy. Its protagonists, old school friends Tom and Kaleil, believe passionately that they are about to make a lot of money, and they feel that this is not only the best thing to be doing, but becoming rich is a truly moral activity.

Startup.com is also the comedy for our times - no one in the end gets hurt in the film, despite many setbacks, with the exception of the people who actually put money into Tom and Kaleil’s company. Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujaim admirably capture the whole episode of dotcom fever.

Because the film is shot on digital video, the proceedings have a remarkable intimacy. This film won a number of awards. It didn’t win the Oscar, perhaps because it is too full of good cheer and good humour. Not to be missed.
