EPISODE 2: THE CALL OF DUTY
Monday 1 August 2005 1.10am-2.10am (Sun night)
In the second episode, a summer of intrigue, leaks and secret meetings
beckon as the controversy over the appointment of a new Archbishop
threatens to divide the Church.
The conservative evangelicals are worried that the appointment
of Rowan Williams is sending out the wrong message and are upset
by his tolerant views towards homosexuality. But his appointment
has come too late for priests such as Martin Kelly who resigned
from his parish four years ago because he felt the Church treated
gay people, like himself, as second class citizens.
Despite the turbulence surrounding it, the everyday business of
the Anglican Church continues with its servants serving on the front-line
at home and abroad. Jimmy Hinton takes up his first job as curate
in a divided parish in Bradford and Army Padre Stephen Franklin
returns home from a difficult posting in Afghanistan.
And, as he prepares to step down, Archbishop George Carey feels
free to speak with uncharacteristic candour about the burden of
responsibility that the role carries.
