- Caro studied sculpture in London from 1946-52, and then served as an assistant to Henry Moore for two years.
- After an inspirational visit to the United States 1959, where he met sculptor David Smith, Caro began making abstract work in steel and iron.
- In 1962 Caro stopped painting his work, but from 1971 allowed them to rust and then varnished them.
- Caro's works are often displayed without plinths, instead they are bolted to the ground.
