MALARIA: THE VACCINE CHALLENGE
|
|
 |
| |
The second of two documentaries highlighting the fight against malaria, a disease which kills millions every year, and which is continuing to spread.
DIRECTOR INTERVIEW
This film looks at global efforts to combat malaria. The journey starts in Palm Beach, Florida, where Gary Goode of Mosquito Control and Dr Jean Malecki of the Health Department are working to control an unexpected outbreak of the disease. The origins, transmission and control of the disease, and the issues surrounding control of the mosquito are explored.
Back in the UK, Professor Adrian Hill of Oxford University has been working tirelessly over the last 10 years in his search for the elusive malaria vaccine. His quest sees volunteers in Oxford willingly being bitten by malaria-infected mosquitoes and involves Professor Hill travelling to the Gambia where the largest ever field trial of one of his vaccines is being conducted.
HAVE YOUR SAY
Economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs is campaigning to persuade wealthy governments to contribute more to the fight against malaria. Asked how much aid we should be providing, he replies: "I beg us to calculate what's needed rather than pull numbers out of the air...don't have people live in conditions you couldn't imagine yourselves or your children living in".
