Edwardian photographs
  THE EDWARDIAN FAMILY ALBUM

Following a national call to arms, Peter Snow welcomes the public and their Edwardian artefacts to Manderston, one of Britain's finest Edwardian country houses.

Photographs, diaries, postcards, scrapbooks and other memorabilia passed down from our turn-of-the-century ancestors are presented to photographic historian Colin Harding, design expert Nicholas Oddy and social historian Juliet Gardiner.

Memorabilia and photos, from studio portraits to snapshots, bring to life an era that saw extremes of wealth and poverty, the arrival of the motor car and the rise of the suffragettes.

Two very different scrapbooks that tell the stories of a lady's maid and her employer are presented by the maid's grandson. Photos show events including a quadruple wedding and a school trip where fifteen-year-old girls are smoking and making single finger gestures – proving that Edwardian teens weren't that different to today’s.

These artefacts from 1901-1914 reveal broader themes behind individual stories and offer insights into a period of progress and innovation.
