First transmitted on BBC One in 1978, this "play with music" tells the story of Arthur Parker. A "cowardly and dishonest" sheet-music salesman in 1930s Britain, Arthur has a
a fistful of dreams and an eye for the ladies. Frustrated by his frigid wife and cynical shopkeepers, he looks to a desperate romance and his inner-life to reach the fantasy world of songs.

Follow the adventures, mishaps and yearnings of Arthur Parker - a travelling song sheet pedlar on a tight commission - trying to make dreams fit the promises of the lyric sheets he carries.
2. THE SWEETEST THING

As teacher Eileen tells her school children their favourite fairy story, Arthur, playing Prince Charming in the tale, is coming to make her his Princess.
3. EASY COME, EASY GO

Arthur has at last returned home to his anxious and waiting wife Joan, who still cares enough to make a new bargain with him. She agrees to finance his business.
4. BETTER THINK TWICE
Sunday 23 January 2005 9.05pm-10.25pm
Arthur and Eileen are both back in London. Arthur, to start his own record shop, Eileen, the country girl, to live the life that begins at Oxford Circus.
5. PAINTING THE CLOUDS
Sunday 30 January 2005 9.05pm-10.25pm
Arthur and Eileen have 'disappeared'. His wife Joan is receiving strange visits from a police inspector, while the case of a murdered blind girl is to be opened.
6. SAYS MY HEART
Sunday 6 February 2005 9.05pm-10.30pm
Arthur is now wanted for murder, so he and Eileen are on the run: hungry, desperate, but still together. They hide in a lonely farmhouse but Arthur makes a fatal error.
