Murtz's biography

Born and raised in London, Murtz (short for Murtaza) was always known for being the talkative one in class. We guess that means a career in broadcasting was always inevitable!

Murtz is a hugely successful, award-winning television and radio broadcaster with well over a decade of experience working in the media. Already an established household name fronting popular Asian digital satellite TV shows for 8 years, Murtz went on to present Sunday Soundtrack and Love Bollywood before gaining his current 3 hours of Saturday afternoon air-time on the BBC Asian Network.

Murtz started out as a model and dancer whilst studying Business Management at university. He featured in several print advertising campaigns for mainstream clients. As a dancer, he worked with the crème of Bollywood's elite choreographers and actors (including Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Karishma Kapoor, Mahima Choudry, Sunil Shetty and Gulshan Grover to mention a few) performing to audiences of over 10,000 people.

With his relatable personality and infectious sense of humour, Murtz cat walked off the dancing stage into his own limelight as a host/compère presenting university shows... It was not before long he was head hunted by television channels and offered to present his own show. Murtz was signed-up as a resident presenter/VJ for Zee TV - all this before the age of 20!

The show was hugely successful establishing Murtz as a broadcaster, journalist and creative director. Popularity of ‘Sorted’ even caught the attention of mainstream media with Murtz being featured in the Channel 4 documentary 'Culture Clash'. He was interviewed by the late veteran broadcaster Sir Charles Wheeler to get his insight on the impact of 9/11 on British Muslims.

After 18 months and recording well over 100 editions of "Sorted", Murtz left the programme to focus on finishing his degree. After graduating from University and to much popular viewer demand to bring him back to their screens, Murtz re-joined the company to focus on a studio based show, "Mutz Cutz", which ran non-stop for 7 years.

With his growing success and hunger to speak with the public, it wasn't before long radio came knocking on the door. After several stints on the internet and with local Southall radio station West Side FM - Murtz was approached to join the ranks of the BBC Asian Network as one of their resident broadcasters.

Murtz started presenting the BBC Asian Network’s weekly two hour Bollywood chart show, Sunday Soundtrack. He was then selected to be one of the presenters for the Asian Network's flagship four hour Bollywood programme - Love Bollywood. This rekindled Murtz as a journalist with him having to review weekly film releases and interviewing actors from the Indian film fraternity. In 2008, Murtz began to present his own three hour weekly request show.

With his distinctive voice and bilingual ability in Hindi and Urdu, Murtz has done numerous voice over’s for corporate clients, films and BBC World - advertising CBeebies programmes to air in India.

Murtz has worked with and interviewed numerous stars from the Indian film industry, from both his work on radio and television. He had the privilege of being given a rare interview with one Bollywood biggest superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, whilst working on the Love Bollywood programme. He has interviewed: Dev Anand, Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Adnan Sami Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Prem Chopra and Om Puri (to name a few). More recently in February 2009, Murtz interviewed Shah Rukh Khan, The King of Bollywood, for the second time, over several days during the Zee Carnival, where Shah Rukh invited Murtz to learn some dance steps from his film Billu.

You can join Murtz with this highly popular show, every Saturday on the BBC Asian Network from 2pm to 5pm.
