Nearly two thirds, (60%) of Asians believe that there are too many immigrants in Britain, a MORI for the BBC Asian Network has found.
The poll of Asians of all faiths and cultures offers a fascinating picture of opinion in the week before the General Election. Three quarters of those polled (75%) believe the decision to invade Iraq was wrong with only 15% agreeing with the decision, while 9% of respondents expressing no view.
Amongst the sample 63% described themselves as ‘certain to vote’.
Trust in politicians, a key electoral issue threw up some interesting results with the major party leaders all found wanting by Asians. The three major Party Leaders in the General Election were all found to be almost equally untrustworthy, with 48% of Asians polled believing that Tony Blair was untrustworthy and 47% having the same opinion of Michael Howard while 33% of Asians polled felt Charles Kennedy was untrustworthy.
This contrasted with views on the trustworthyness of Party Leaders which found that Tony Blair was felt to be trustworthy by 37% of respondents, Michael Howard by 15% and Charles Kennedy by 30%.
Three quarters of respondents felt that the UK has positive race relations between people of different ethnic backgrounds.
