Poll carried out by MORI on behalf of the Asian Network

Polling Station

The poll was commissioned by the BBC Asian Network from Mori. It was conducted in the two weeks up to last Sunday and in communities across the UK where the Asian population exceeds 10%

Main findings from the Poll

60% of Asians believe there are too many immigrants in Britain

75% say decision to go to war in Iraq was wrong

75% say Britain has good race relations

75% say an Asian candidate would not affect Party preference

Mistrust in Main party leaders

23% of Asians believe an Asian could be Prime Minister in the next 20 years

Nearly two thirds, (60%) of Asians believe that there are too many immigrants in Britain, a MORI for the BBC Asian Network has found.

The poll of Asians of all faiths and cultures offers a fascinating picture of opinion in the week before the General Election. Three quarters of those polled (75%) believe the decision to invade Iraq was wrong with only 15% agreeing with the decision, while 9% of respondents expressing no view.

Amongst the sample 63% described themselves as ‘certain to vote’.

Trust in politicians, a key electoral issue threw up some interesting results with the major party leaders all found wanting by Asians. The three major Party Leaders in the General Election were all found to be almost equally untrustworthy, with 48% of Asians polled believing that Tony Blair was untrustworthy and 47% having the same opinion of Michael Howard while 33% of Asians polled felt Charles Kennedy was untrustworthy.

This contrasted with views on the trustworthyness of Party Leaders which found that Tony Blair was felt to be trustworthy by 37% of respondents, Michael Howard by 15% and Charles Kennedy by 30%.

Three quarters of respondents felt that the UK has positive race relations between people of different ethnic backgrounds.

Immigrants may be a problem to todays society especially young asians with having that westernised attitude, I gotta say is dont forget ur roots. It was totally out of order to go to war with Iraq, its crunch time know for Tony.

I find it perturbing that second generation asians have a problem on immigration -have you forgot you are also the sons and daughters of immigrants! ask your parents the problems they had to be accepted in the UK perhaps then we may be more welcoming and helpful in intigrating and accepting the new batch of immigrants.

our fathers laboured day and night when they first arrived in Britian, today the migrants are a burden on us tax payers. i don't want to be paying my taxes for people who make no contributions at all.

I totally agree with these results however 15% said yes, whats wrong with these people?, It had nothing to do with Blair, he got involved and now he will face the consequences. Bye Bye Blair!

        Mr. Khan
I think the poll reflects true feeling of the Asians. The Iraq WAR is unjust and is WAR for Oil and was conducted on false intelligence. Tony Blair Lied to the whole British Nation and we collectively should make every effort to show our true feelings against Tony Blair.

        Dave, London
I think the country going to war with Iraq was a very wrong. It's something that can't be undone now because the damage has been done.
