In recent years shisha or hookah-smoking has spread like crazy, showing the world a liberated, secular face of young British Muslims who are too traditional for five pints and a dance and yet too rebellious to listen to political Islamists. They see the shisha bars as dens of potential sin and the corruption of women. Shisha bars have created a multicultural vibe, starting with an essentially Muslim crowd, now attracting all stripes of Asian, Arab, black and increasingly white people to hang out and smoke flavoured tobacco through ornate water pipes known as Shisha, Hookah or Nargileh. The effect of the ban will be devastating for many. For the Asian Network Report, BBC reporter Mukul Devichand has been following the shisha subculture’s last-ditch legal battle to save itself from extinction. Read what others have said..
