    Racism in Reverse

    02 Jul 07
Manjot Sumal investigates whether there’s a growing problem of racism within the Asian community.

The Asian Network investigates whether there’s a growing problem of racism within the Asian community. Post 7/7, islamaphobia has resulted in more attacks on anyone with brown skin as hysteria leads racists to confuse the term Asian with terrorist. But racial suspicions and prejudice don’t just travel one path.

We hear from personalities like Asian Network’s Nikki Bedi and author Nirpal Singh Dhaliwal on why the way they live their lives causes people to cry 'coconut'? And from the brutal Glasgow murder of a white teenager by an Asian gang, to the prejudices passed on between Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims, Manjot Sumal asks how much of a part discrimination plays in the lives of today’s British Asians?

Here here Mr PardSingh! Spot on, stop the term Asian, its annoying and inaccurate. We're so diverse and amazing, we shouldn't be grouped together as "Asians", especially when makin accusations of racism. Some ppl are ignorant, many are NOT. Take people for who they are.

      Pardeep Singh, Dublin/Frankfurt
What nonsense. Some people are racist, some aren’t. Some Pakistani’s are racist, some aren’t. Some Indian’s are racist, some aren’t. The term “Asian” is both lazy and inaccurate in 2007, and to then use the term to try and group separate communities together (communities of individuals) as having one single mindset is plain ridiculous. Britain is a globalised nation attempting to compete in a globalised economy, where there are 6.5 billion people, of which 4 billion (all approximations) are from the continent of Asia. These people are as diverse, if not more diverse, racially, ethnically, culturally as any other continent on Earth. This is an issue for individuals, not for communities. It should be addressed at the personal level looking at one’s thought processes and level of understanding and education.

i think the rasism problem is growing, espetially with muslims. i am a muslim and people think im a terorist! and im only 13 years old! im fedup with this?!

I think its time that there is a separate identity for different people from different countries. "Aisan Community", now can refer to a greater amount of population in the UK, so each one must be identified as Bangladeshi, Indian, Sri Lankan or a Pakistani. These four countries have completely different cultures and people and we cannot continue referring as "Asians", as it used to be earlier, when the numbers were not very high as they are now.

Continued...This is what I firmly believe to be at the route of all evil, past, present and future; a battle which is constantly being lost, one which each of us fight from cradle to grave, COURAGE vs FEAR.One allows questioning and self belief, the other compliance and manipulation.Oh, I didn't mention my race, or the colour of my skin did I? Think of me as a mixture of Mohammed Ali and Johnny Lydon; I could be black, I could be white, I could be wrong, I could be right. In closing, I really hope we get on in Britain, I think we can and I think we can show the rest of the world, that ordinary people 'hate hatred' and we have the COURAGE to kick it out.

Racism (wrong word) 'Prejudice', within the Asian community, will be a necessary evil, in order to flush out those, who use religion to demote the worth of life and love and replace it with a warped vision of 'honour'.Because Asian communities are 'tight nit', (the fault of decades of British Prejudice) outsiders will (wrongly) tar whole communities with the same brush. The net result will be an ever more uncontollable, spiralling of senseless bloodshed and pain; exactly what the exponents wish for. There (in my view) is only one way to stop this eventuallity. Every race, religion indeed everyone with a 'mind', must ask themselves, not just 'why', but 'how', intelligent beings such as we are continually allow, 'love' and 'honour'; the true heart of every religion and every consciousness to be trampled on. For what it's worth; as a 43 year old, father of 3, middle England village dweller, a sceptic of all forms of religion, worshiper of 'honour' and 'love' in their true sense.

I can appreciate your point that shri lankhans and im sure many others from within the asian subcontinent are discriminated against not only because of their sometimes dark skin but also because of prejudices held about political or religious persuasions for instance. The colour of your skin should be celebrated not looked down on,the world needs to record the track again about...that having white skin does not make you better able at everything and have better opportunities. Black skin has been celebrated in many ways ...Krishnas skin was considered beauitiful...many other historical and political figures were celebrated for the colour of their dark skin...many of the Maharajas of india etc....we need to reverse the attitudes of light skinned asains and those who clearly are somewhere in between and think its better for their children to marry lighter skinnned people...the list goes on.But this is just one feature of the internal racism within the asian community...that is the debate here...I dont know if people will willingly wish to talk about it...but hi time we did.

As the Sikh-Indian/Hindu-Indian community in my area is small in comparison to the Pakistani-Muslim community, the majority of Indians will disassociate themselves with being confused with being called asian. This started well before 9/11 it was sort of synomynous with the reason why indians in Bradford were upset at being called asian during the riots. In our area most crimes within the asian community are committed by pakistanis and the indian people do not want to be branded as they have spent years trying build up a name and integrate into British society.

Dear SirsI have just returned from a six month trip to India, where I saw at first hand the amount of racism in the motherland, as there exists here in the UK, amongst the Asian community. Though born in India and am a second generation Indian, I see lots of incidents where our own people are still blind to the old ways and treat each other with such contempt, that it leaves me with much sadness, knowing people are so stupid, even in this day and age. I find that there are too many of our people, who think they are better then the next person. But let me tell them one thing. We live in a country that is great and has allowed us to live a better life then we might ought not have done, had we still been back in the old country. Another thing I have noticed about our asian people, they are rude, mannerless and show no respect towards other people, and this should not be the case nowadays. Sorry for being so frank, but the truth hurts when it concerns one own kind. sunil

I think racism has just gone to far, but the thing is if a coloured person is being rasism on a white person nothing will be said

      Max, Milton Keynes
Asians for centuries have been oppressed by Asians themselves and other race groups. With lessons like those it is difficult to accept the level of racism that exists. The 21st century, when most people are libera it appears that some Asians are stuck in some of time warp. laming culture and religion is not a valid excuse.I hope that the more liberal Asians can become role models for the others to follow suit.

I have a lot of Asian Friends, i m white and they treat me like one of them!Cant understand why other people dont see each other as Human beings, but I guess its down to the personality!I thought that whatever god you believed in meant that you should only do good in this world and anyone who does bad things will be judged by the highest of them all, yes god himself. Why cant we all get along, the place would be a better place! Why hate when you can love thats gotta be the best reward their is!keep it positive their is too many negatives!

prejudice is almost ecceptable in these communities despite their religions preaching otherwise, that is the sad think about it.Even asains are more isolated from each other at times than they are from their white friends...is the reason we dont always eccept each other because we are so intwined by our histories?Or is it because we are deluded with the idea that we will loose our culture and tradition? We need to think more broadly about this issue, has suspicious has a way of making itself known to people...creating racism?

      Jethro.Kandasamy .Bognor Regis
We Srilankans always looked down on by many other Asians possibly for our dark skin.I seems to interduce myself as of Srilankan Tamil origin and as a non-Muslim heritage to White people after 7/7.
