In India, despite the practice of female foeticide been illegal since the 1980’s an estimated seven million girls have gone missing from India’s population over the last 25 years. Some of them will have been killed after they were born, or allowed to die within the first few days of life, however, most will have been aborted.
As ultrasound machines, which carry out the scans, have become more easily available, the practice has spread all over India according to Dr Puneet Bedi , one of the country’s top foetal surgeons .
