Pops from Tigerstyle looks at the effect the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar had on British Sikhs

“….they dragged my older brother out and started beating him with iron poles on the head and arms …he fell to the ground, my mother was screaming and crying… I was crying too …”

The story of ‘Harpal’ living in Delhi on October 1984. His family had only been living there for 6 months when they got caught up in the anti –Sikh riots. Now living in Bristol, married and a father of three, for Harpal the memories and effects of 1984 continue to affect his life.

In June 1984 the Indian army under the instructions of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stormed the Sikhs’ most sacred shrine – the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Four months later, in revenge, the Prime Minister's Sikh body guards assassinated her. This led to attacks on Sikhs throughout India particularly in Delhi. These dramatic events had a huge impact on Sikhs in the UK and Worldwide and led to some calling for an independent Khalistan, a Sikh state in Punjab.

Twenty five years on in this Asian Network Reports Special we examine what impact this still has on the next generation of British Sikhs.

I find it interesting when people state Sant Jarnail Singhji was a terrorist/extremist, etc. When these people have done no research instead taken on board what others around have stated - an influenced and uneducated view. In "Hindu"stan during the 80s the media was controlled by state government and they congress caused state terrorism. Those like Amrit (Midlands) state Sikhs came from Hindus this statement alone is hideous and ignorant.. within Guru Granth Sahibji clearly states the "Hindus are blind" and sri Guru Gobind Singhji in Chaupi Sahib states "I have HEARD of Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesh, etc BUT I do NOT recognise them"DO your own research and educate yourselves like I did.

      Daljit Singh Sandhu - Nottingham
Sant Bhindranwale woke up a sleeping nation, 25 years on and his words and actions inspire young sikhs all over the world, and still strike fear into the indian goverment and the hindu people in india aka hindustan. KHALISTAN ZINDABAD.

      M.Singh
Bhindranwale was the sikh version of jinnah, a divisive fanatic. who's legacy led to 10 years of bloodshed and religious based killings. religion should be in the heart not worn on your sleeve.

      Jay, West Midlands
Why are not the valid and related posts re Sikh extremism and terrorism arising from and related to this thread not being posted?

      Jag, Birmingham
The Khalistan movement has also produced problematic miltant and extremist groups that are on the UK, USA and India's list of terrorist organisation - such as the Khalistan Zindabad Force. The Punjab and storming of the Golden Temple issue is not as easy and clear cut as some of these messages seem to suggest.

      sunny, delhi
Dear Jas S Santhalee ...have u ever thought in many countries in this world there r few problems... in US its blacks, in europe its different. In India its different but dividing countries in not a solution to this...have u ever thought how many punjabis (not sikhs only) stays in mumbai (they have their businesses even in Mizoram too), what will happen to those???India united is great n i request u all to please respect its culture in which we have punjabis, bengalis, marathis, and all

      Delraj Singh, Huddersfield
Your either a proud sikh or your a proud punjabi indian, cant be both, india screwed us over and you all know it, so if ur still proud to be and indian or a punjabi then you need to be a little more educated on the matter, if you dnt understand why i said punjabi aswell, the reason for that is because the stero typical punjabi is a Drunk and Sikhs do not drink so again if you really are a sikh then you should not associate with the wrong crowd e.g. Punjabis

      M. Singh Sandhu (Birmingham)
I don't understand why theres some Sikh's out there calling Sant Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale a 'terrorist'. He stood up against the tyrranical behaviour of the Indian government and helped draw attention to the Sikh identity. He brought back the perfect image of a Sikh role to thousands of people around the world. So can someone please tell me how someone who is fighting to stay alive and fighting for the right of every man, woman and child a terrorist? As Sikhs (practising or not) we should be supporting the notion of Khalistan not standing against it, and people should look up the history of their faith and question their morals and ethical viewpoints especially in todays society.

      K Singh
Khalistan must be established, how are we... the sikh nation supposed to know when the indian government could pull something like this on us again, with a separate sovereign state, there is no possibility of such atrocities occuring as was seen in 1984... sikh girls raped... Sikh men having their beards cut off through force by the Hindu Mobs.... Sikhs burnt alive, sikhs wake up NOW before itis too late... another Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale is needed NOW to wake the Sikh nation up from its current affairs

      Sukh-kanwal Kukreja
I completely agree with D. Singh. Sant Bindrawale was killed just because Indira Ghandhi was feeling opposed and thought someone was actually coming up against her. My dad was heavily linked with the Singhs from India during that time, they would come to Thailand and seek cover. Just hearing their stories brought tears to my eyes, I really can't imagine what they have gone through.

      Jassi, West Midlands
The Khalistan Zindbad Force (KZF) have claimed on the on website that they killed the dalit Saint, Sant Ramanand, and wounded viciously Sant Niranjan Dass in Vienna on 24 May 09. And why? Because of religious differences and misguided terror and hate. The KZF is the extreme side of the fall out from the Khalistan movement, but it does show that Sikhs also have an extremist and terrorist movement that needs quashing. Ironic then that we only hear about Indian state violence on Sikhs. The Vienna incident reveals the whole issue as much more complex.

      Sandeep, coventry
Listening to this has really given me an insight of 84 but the more and more people i talk to the more i get confused...even reading these posts. The majority of people who talk about Bhindrawala claim that he is an amaizing man and did sikhs justice but others claim that he is a terrorist...i do not judge as i haven't read his biography or the book about operation blue star but if he was such an amazing man...why do people call him a terrorist? can some one explain this to me please....thanks you

      A. Kaur
the khalistan movement is always projected as a terrorist movement. People need to research more, and realise that for someone to be prepared to take the life of Indra Gandhi, there must be a seriously good motive behind it and also only occur as a last resort. People should also know that the dheli riots were just the begining of the anti-Sikh program in india, Operation Blue Star was followed by Operation Woodrose, where Sikh youths were targeted and shot on sight, and Operation Shudi Karan, where Sikh girls and women were raped by police, please do your research before you form your conclusions.

      Onkar Singh Liverpool
First of all to those who think that Bhindrawale was wrong how would you like it if i come to your house take most of your wages and let you feed on my scraps? dont think you would like it all, bhindrawale was asking for was that the electricity from punjabs dams be priorotised to punjab, that we have a national goldent temple train service and that a program live from harmander sahib be broadcast daily. Some of these things have happened so the blood shed could have been avoided, but not all effectively he also asked that if the muslims have been given their own soveriegn state then the sikhs should also as they also had territory before the british rule. As for people saying that khalistanis are terrorist i think is completely ingnorant. I dont hear people calling bhagat singh a terrorist or Udam singh a terrorist, was the Ghandi a terrorist? And sikhism did not stem from hinduism at all, it is completely different. The simple fact is india does not want to give up its cash cow that is punjab it feeds the whole of india the indian goverment does not want to pay for something it can take by brutality and force.

      Amrit , India
India has a Sikh PM for the past five years. And most probably for the next five years. But since he came to power not a single strong assurance has been given by him regarding putting the guilty of Sikh killings to justice. All he said was"Increased compensation has been offered to those who suffered in those riots and 84 is only remembered during elections"And no word on punishing the guilty.

      Amollak Singh, Walsall
Thank you for this, great work but is there any way I can download it?

      Jasjit Kaur, London
Its absolutely disgusting what the Indian government did in 1984, there are thousands left widowed in punjab today, the massacre of innocent children, men, women, its about time we get justice, 25 years on is long time and too much time to be waiting to get justice....the government cannot say that they attacked sri Darbar Sahib because of the so-called 'terrorists', why did they then successfully plan and attack 37 other gurdwaras-it's sick....why did they choose to attack on a day when they knew there would be thousands of innocent devotees in the complex-it was Guru Arjan Dev ji's shaheedi gurpurbh-it was a mere excuse to kill as many Sikhs as possible...Khalistan is a solution- without it we are still living under the government that still even today is causing tyranny, its all under the table-there are still cases where innocent Singhs have been kidnapped by the police (and yes there are witnesses) and then never returned home to their families-why because such Singhs e.g Jaswant Singh had records of the number of innocent Sikhs killed by the government in 84....all other faiths have there own lands to freely practice their faith and so do we deserve it-KHALISTAN ZINDABAD!!!!

      D.singh (Bham)
The only reason why Sant Bhindrawala was killed was cos he was a voice for the Sikhs, he was a powerful man with a big and growing following, linking him to be a terrorist was a way of for the Indian goverment to silence a voice which was getting louder..25 years ago, something seriously went wrong in India, and justice has still not been done... the riots in Delhi, these people must have been aged between 20-30 years old, now they are probably 45-55 years old, and walking around freely?..!!.. How can a goverment which is meant to treat you all the same let something like this happen... ?

      D.Singh (bham)
"BS Rajput,- Please do not forget the many innocent Punjabi Hindus who were killed and butcherd by khalistani terrorists and Bhindranwales men".. Sant Bhindranwale was linked to many terrorist attacks by the indian media / goverment, some of these were staged to make him a less powerful man. His fight was not against the Hindus, he has been quoted in saying if you are Sikh, be a good Sikh, if you are Hindu be a good Hindu, and if you are Muslim be a good Muslim. He was a religious leader (sant) at the time of his death it is reported that over 45 thoushand sikhs had taken amrit, due to his influence and preaching, he had bought sikhs off drugs and alchol and into their religion.

      Sumit, Southall
S Singh you have clearly lost our marbles son... Bhindranwale did not hide or take refuge in the temple complex that was where he resided as did the others who faught gallantly alongside him. He was neither for nor against Khalistan he just asked for better rights and an end to Sikhs being treated as second class citizens. You clearly have no idea about what you are saying... as if you did you would know the sudden curfew which was announced on the 3rd June and no warning was given to those who worshipped in the golden temple about an attack. Listen to Bhindranwales speeches on youtube and tell me if u still think he was a hoax and a coward. Its people like you who bring disgrace to our religion and have no idea of the difference between bravery and cowardice.

      M. Singh Sandhu (Birmingham)
I agree with Gurneet Kaur. Since when has fighting for your basic rights, for your religion, and your most of all the future of family and oneself ever been an act of 'terrorism'? Bhinderanwale never asked for Khalistan but said he would take it if it was 'offered to the sikh people' and also stated that 'once the Indian Army step foot into the Darbar Sahib then that would be the foundation stone for Khalistan to be made' I sympathisise with all the innocent victims that were caught up in the Delhi riots and the mass murder that happened there and elsewhere all over the state of India but the fact still remains that the Indian government as 'the largest Democracy in the world' should have and could have handled the delicate situation more democratically and with more sense other than the die hard attitude of sending a countless number of troops to attack one of the most important shrines in the Sikh faith. There are many people that disagree with the notion of Khalistan but there are always 2 sides to a story.

      Nihang Singh Khalsa
There is so much of money wasted on senseless false propaganda and terrorist sympathising music ..had our Sikh brothers got some sense ..they would have used the money for the upliftment of the 1984 victims ..these guys are fooling the sikh community. If you khalistanis have got that much guts ..and if you feel your born of one father try asking for Khalistan from the Pakistani side..and what the hell did u do when Taliban extorted money from my brothers in Swat valley ????

      G Singh , Kent
The people who says Khalistanis are/were terrorist should read the fact books and search true information. Who would answers mothers and sisters of thousands of young sikh men killed by police under fake encounters searched by Jaswant singh Khalra. How do your justify thousands of sikh youth missing since 84 (actually killed in encounters). Read Anandpur Sahib matta, thats what bhindrawala asked for and Sant longowal sacrified his life.Open your mind ...you have internet access...read thuth and stand for thuth.

      kiran hayes
I just want to say that i think this documentary that you have made is really good. I knew briefly about what happend but this has given me alot more knowledge and the information is shocking. This has made me look at Sikhi in a new light and learnt to appreciate it more, I'm 16 and there is a lot of bad press about teenagers but its things like this that open their eyes and make people more aware of their religion. 1984 was a huge event in sikh history and i think its every sikhs duty to know about what happend. its sad to see that the younger generations and people of my age not caring about such events and a reason for this is that they do not have sufficient knowledge but things like this will help them understand sikhi.

      Jazz; Hayes
Thanks alot for raising this issue, has left a deep sympathy over what happened in 1984! Raj Kharega Khalsa!

      Parandeep Singh Yorkshire
After all this if you do not believe that Sikhs deserve to live in their own nation where they will be safe from threats of the Hindus and Muslims and all other tyrants, then you clearly believe that it is acceptable to allow the desecration of Harimandar Sahib again and once again for Yudh to be re-engaged.Remember the goal of Khalistan is to create a haven for those who wish to live out their lives in this dark age free from fear that they will be oppressed and harmed by others. Khalistan is there for the peace of the Sikh people and all who wish to live in peace. However an ancient warrior once said "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"That is Latin, it means If You Wish For Peace, Prepare For War.

      Parandeep Singh
1984 will never be forgotten, just as the atrocoties the Sikhs have suffered throughout jail such as when at Meer Mano's jail, Sikh women had their children chopped up and hung around their mothers necks, and when Ahmed Shah Abduli desecrated the Golden Temple and put left dead animals in the sarovar. Both these tyrants got their divine justice and led to the formation of the Sikh confederacy. Now Sikhs were faced with the same issue in '84 when Indira Gandhi desecrated Harimandar Sahib and the 40 major Gurdwaras of Punjab. this was the initial step of "operation Shanti" which was the planned ethnic cleansing of all Sikhs in india. Fortunately we have Singhs in the Khalsa such as Shaheeds Beant and Satwant who assassinated Gandhi before she executed us.

      Jas, Southall
The comments against Bhindranwale here are atrocious and come from people who clearly have no inkling of the man he was - not a coward 'S Singh' - nice of you to be open about who you are! Nobody ever asked for Khalistan nor do Sikhs want it - we want a united Punjab. We are not Indian; we are Indian and Pakistani. Our capital Lahore lies in Pakistan which causes us as much distress as the fact that Delhi looks down upon the Punjab. Re-distribution of rivers; the green revolution; inadequate payments to farmers; scheduled caste act discrimination for positions of power.. how can India say it is fair to the Punjabi's? What a joke...

      Militant Warrior midlands
Amrit, Midlands listen to Bhindranwalaz speechz and find out were did Sikhism cum from. U leave a baby as he is naturaly he/she is a Sikh but cuttin hair u convert him/her into different religon if no man shaved he will be a Sikh and if a person takes amrit they will became Singh/Kaur so plz think what u are sayin thnx

      Harvinder Singh, Rome, Italy
i think that one should read the second volume of A History of Sikhs by Khushwant Singh to understand some more about the Punjabi Suba movement.

      Jagpal singh riar / DamDamiTaksaal / India/Punjab
BS Rajput innocent hindu that were killed ? sorry did i read that correctly, oh mera veeera which day in age was you born Talking such nonsence, the hindu mobs went round the villages destroying and demolishing what ever sikhs made.

What I don't seem to realize why isn't there more things like happning all over the world what Popz and the people with in this documentry are doing. Our Sikh people that are stuck in this MIYA WALAE DUNIYA need to relize this pain this conflict of heartache this operation which destroyed not only lives and homes in India in the Punjab and took away land marks and village shops what Sikhs made.It has hit the UK hard it has hit canada hard it hit the states hard it has the whole world hard, and alot of sikhs till this day shed tears to remember our Sikh peoples struggle and our battle we had to fight.Isn't this documentry here to aware us whats going and how we need to approach life and what we do? I'll answer that for you.Yes it does why...because Sikhs can be attacked by any group by any gang by any member of the Indian Goverment if certain Things with in the sikh society doesn't go the way they want.So sikhs need to be brave, stay on guard, look after one another treat your sikhs individually like own brothers and sisters and always remember like maharaaj says."Whom Who Can't Talk Within A Pleasant Manor Has No Right To Talk At All"

Gagandip Singh, Kent (British Sikh Student Federat
1984 (June and November) have been fittingly termed as the 3rd genocide of the sikhs. It is important for Sikhs and Non-Sikhs alike to not seperate this part of our history from before 1984 as this is one continuous struggle from the times of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and before, right up till today, and should not be presented as independent movements. We must be more active in promoting solution based arguements and not just simpling demanding justice or Independence without explaining it's just reasons and benifits.

      H Singh - handsworth
S singh needs to check his facts before making such comments - he is wrong to say that if we wanted Khalistan we would have got it - India banned mention of khalistan in panjab - and elections at the time enabling us to politically argue for khalistan,im not saying there werent bad apples among us who took out their rage on innocent panjabis - but self determination is a right for all people - is he going to call snp and alex sammond an extremist for calling for scottish independance?

      Jagdev Bassi
Many innocent civilians were killed by Khalistani's prior to Operation Bluestar. I would say the operation was a sacrifice the community had to make for allowing terrorists take over their religion and manipulate it for their own political gains.

      Updesh Singh Coventry
I just wanted to ask to the people that say that Jarnail Singh was a coward because it was his fault for hiding in Harmandir Sahib, if the army didnt want to kill the innocents then why didnt they just let the people that wanted to leave leave? why did they take them into interrogation and torture them and kill them? why did they line up sikh boys and shoot them saying you were involved. 1984 was just the beginning , a couple years after Ghandi herself was killed by Sikhs, and her son said when the big tree falls the Earth tremble. Why didnt the Earth tremble when he was killed Hindu assasins.

      Harpinder singh
It's about time sikhs get their own land, as all religions have their land why can't sikhs?! Hindus have India, muslims have a lot of countries etc. But then again everyone should be treated equally where ever they are but this is not happening. DW soon their will be a war and khalistan will then be created and will be peace for 5000 years after. Remember KHALISTAN ZINDABAAD

      Shere Singh, Cannock
Do not forget all the innocents who were murdered in cold blood. Do not forget the role of government sponsored death squads as mentioned by the former Indian Intelligence Bureau Chief MK Dhar in his book Open Secrets. Do not forget that Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji delivered sermons around Punjab everyday. The government could easily have stopped one of his convoys if they had a credible case against him. Instead the Indian Government chose to attack the Harimandir Sahib complex knowing full well that the complex would be full of devotees.

      Jas Kaur, Wednesbury
This was a sad event in India's history, I was only 8 years old when it happened but i remember it well. I visited India a year later and I remember seeing all the bullet holes in the temple and the surrounding marble, it was not a nice sight. Gandhi should not have sent the military into our holy shrine but at the same time Bhindrawala should not have taken weapons there either. Wrongs were on both sides and i'm sure there must have been another way. As a result the riots that followed affected many including my family in Delhi, my first cousin was murdered and many other male relatives had to cut their hair to stay safe. I hope lessons have been learnt from this and it is not repeated in the future. It is not something i want my kids to see.

      Walter Fryer, Wolverhamption
Time and time again majorities persecute the helpless minorities. Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was a simple man of a simple upbringing he neither wanted Khalistan nor opposed it. He was a freedom fighter of the Sikhs in a nation where to this day Sikhs are legally considered as a sect of Hinduism. Operation Bluestar was a barbaric slaughter designed to break the morale of the Sikhs not to capture Sant Ji. Sant Ji had been arrested before without conflict, but was released once the allegations were found to be false. This was just an excuse of the Nazi government to carry out their ethnic cleansing. No one was spared, how would the government explain the murder of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who dared to speak up against the tyranny taking place?Yet still the government hasn't learned, it continues to sponsor institutions such as the RSS to infiltrate and destroy minority groups. If the Sikh religion is to remain then Khalistan is seemingly the only option.

      Veer Singh (London)
      Great documentary

The foudnation stone of Khalistan was laid when they attacked the Holy shrines across panjab with their armies,Muslims faced a similar genocide in gujarat 2002 and Christians last year in orrisa

Let's set the record straight. If I told you 6months ago that the MP's were fiddeling their expenses, chances are you wouldn't have believed me.....No way can someone so senior take the risk of messing up their whole career over petty expenses, you would have said. But the reality is its true. In other words what governments can do is unbelievable for the ordanary man and woman in the street. Indian Government is no exception, rather far from it. They are bullies, unfair and further more they are in charge and no one in the world wants to know and no one can do anything about it. Respect to those who tried. But in this world money talks and if you haven t got it you are a no body ! Simple as that! For those who still cant come to terms with it. Just imagine your child, or brother/sister at school and is being picked on by other kids and you complain to the teachers and in particular the head teacher, but they dont want to know. What are you going to do about it? Hey and when you do whatever even those people dont want to hear you. BOY YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. So now is the time to take your own actions, And good luck to you mate!

      Jagraj Singh Slough
The horror of 1984 should not be forgotten, Bhindrawale fought for the freedom the Sikhs. You must remember the Congress party wanted a total wipe out of Sikhs across India, thousands of Sikhs were mytseriously disseapering from many villages in Punjab. Hindu mobs were killing inncoent Sikhs, setting them on fire. No Bhindrawale was not a terroist, he was a freedom fighter, a respectable man who is highly thought of all over the globe. He had to take refuge inside the Golden Temple Complex because the Congress Party or Indra Ghandi to be more specific were planning an attack on the Golden Temple Complex, because they knew thousands of pilgrems would be visitng the Complex at this time of year. Bhindrawale and Khalistan will forever be remembered!

      Harpreet Singh Gill
What happend was just heartbreaking! Where is/was the justice?

      Gurneet Kaur, Kent
1984 will be always be linked to the notion of Khalistan as this is a strong course of action that can be taken to ensure what happened in 1984 never happens again.Bhindrawale never asked for Khalistan initially simply asked for better rights for Sikhs, for us not to be treated as second class citizens. Now when a government attacks your holiest place and kills thousands then covers the worlds eyes through a media boycott and even 25 yeats will not bring the attackers to justice-are you telling me the demands for Khalistan should not be listened too? Look at what is happening in Punjab today, 1984 wasn’t just a stand alone event. Even to this day Punjab has the largest number of people leaving to go abroad then any other state (Birmingham University)-why is this the case? Self determination is a basic right-who doesn’t want to assert their own future. I often feel fustrated at the stereotype that some have ‘Khalistani=militancy’ since when did wanting a free and safe home for your religion, family and community to flourish mean militancy.

      S Singh (Nottingham)
Khalistan was (and is) a false Myth. Thousands of Indians died for a free united India - why try and break it up? Khalistanis killed hundreds of innocent punjabis - and most Punjabis remember this as a dark part in our history. Bhindranwale should never have taken cover in the golden temple like a coward. True heros (like Bhagat Singh) face death openly. Khalistanis were like the modern Taliban (backward and cowardly). Thank god they were destroyed quickly and Punjab returned to freedom. If the people of Punjab wanted it - it would have happened. We want our women free and our people educated!

      BS Rajput, Wolverhampton

Although the attack on a religious site should not be applauded, one must rememeber that within this religious site was a group of terrorists. What followed was detrimental to relations between the Hindu and Sikh community. Sikhism originated from Hinduism therefore there should be mutual respect between both religions such that they unite together.

The carnage of Sikhs after Gandhi's assassination will never be forgotten and those wounds will never heal. It's been 25 years but the images witnessed on television as a child make me angry and to this day, some politicians in India deny the genocide of 84. We will never forget Operation Blue Star and the riots. In light of this anniversary, a moving film by Harpreet Kaur called "The Widow Colony" is highly recommended. The film takes an in-depth look into the lives of the widows whose husbands were killed in the 1984 riots. Chardee kulaah.

      Sandeep, Devon
What happened in 84 was extremely sad and disturbing. But demands of a separate khalistani state are wrong & edging on foolish, i am a proud punjabi and indian.
