Asians on Lockdown - 16 Mar

Bobby Friction goes to prison and talks to British Muslims who say they’re racially taunted.

“…I’ve been called a terrorist and, just because I grow my beard they call me ‘stupid Muslim’

    Prisoner ‘Mo’.

This is the experience of one British Asian Muslim inside a prison for young offenders who alleged he was racially taunted and picked on by staff.

In the first of this two part series Bobby Friction goes to Europe’s biggest youth offender’s institute, Glen Parva in Leicestershire to find out what life is really like for Asians in prison.

We lock up more young people than any other country in Europe. The biggest rise has been the number of British Muslims now behind bars. There are almost 4000 Asian Muslims in our prisons - compare that to 608 Sikhs and 357 Hindus.

For Husain, the biggest problem is not being there for his mum. He hopes he’ll soon get his tag, Mohammad says jails are not that bad but his mum cries every time she visits and for Mo not being able to put his son to bed is something he finds tough. The one thing that unites them is their faith – they’re British Muslims on Lockdown.

Next week on part 2 on ‘Asians on Lockdown’ Bobby Friction goes to Brixton Prison.

The reality is, why are they there in the first place? Drugs, Theft, Fraud etc. British muslim youth are a lost cause, especially in places like east london, birmingham, bradford/leeds, glasgow. What do all these places have in common? Poverty, lack of education and high crime rates that has blended into the areas for decades. So they are now in young offenders institutes (glen parva is well known in my area...i know a few kids who ended up there...came out went straight, then decided to go back to their old ways). The good thing is, the facilities for muslims in prison are near perfect whether its their social, religious or other needs they have all been met by the prison service and the co-operation of the muslim community. Their will always be institutional racism though so i doubt you can do much about that in prison. The worst thing for these individuals is being rehabilitated back into the community. Most will be ostracized and will be walking around with a massive tag on their forehead saying "criminal".
