As the first Asian generation of post-war immigrants enters old age, what impact is being felt on the middle generations who have to look after them?
Every Asian family knows the lessons of Bollywood films, look after your parents when they are old, if not some horrible karma is waiting for you. But in 21st century Britain, life in the fast lane doesn’t make allowances for the traditional Asian extended family.
For many, looking after their ageing parents and keeping down a career is a difficult balancing act. Unlike their white counterparts, putting Granny in a home or depending on social services may be considered selfish and disrespectful.
Navid Akhtar examines what help is available for Asian sons and daughters in looking after elderly parents and doing justice to their special needs. Navid meets carers and those being cared for, as well as experts, to try and find a workable solution to the problem.
