Asian Nation: My life, my roots, my music

Your Stories

A journey from East to West

By: Ali

Migration from East to West opens doors of opportunities for many depending on what you acquire from a new culture and society. Having done my medical graduation and Masters in Business Administration from Pakistan and equipped with experience in Paediatrics and management, I felt the urge to further my study in London.

When I first came to London with the intention of acquiring my second Masters, I realized that London being a multicultural city, itself is an educational institution giving you awareness about the different cultures. This city opens up your mind and shapes up your thoughts into new views and ideas. You get opportunities to interact and socialize with people having varied ethnic backgrounds.

The setback which I have received in London is the knowledge that the Asian community esp. the Pakistani and Bangladeshi community who are settled here for three or four decades have not been able to develop themselves and integrate into the society. This is completely in contrast to the views I had had before stepping my foot in London. These Pakistani and Bangladeshi community who came to this country many years back and started working as a labour are still in the same field more or less. Even their first or second generation have not been able to educate themselves enough to climb up the ladder of progression and acquire professional skills, apart from few. They are still chained to the old traditional ideologies which their ancestors had practiced in their native countries. This Asian community is entrapped within the cultural web.

In order to progress and be an important element of the society, they need to educate themselves so that they can bringforth their views upfront, intermingle with the British society and be an important part of the economy of this country. London is a city of migrants and these immigrants can be an important part of the society if they shun their old, traditional and cultural practices and broaden the horizon of their mentalities. They should socialize with the people of different culture and acquire good qualities from other cultures.

London is a blend of East and West and it can only develop if both of immigrants and locals work hand in gloves for its progression.
