A portrait of William Denny I (1779–1838), who was the father of the founders of the William Denny & Brothers shipyard in Dumbarton. The firm grew to be one of the most innovative shipyards in the world, pioneering developments such as commercial tank testing, ship stabilizers and the hovercraft.
